Owner Erik Schaffer, CP, designed a realistic-looking, high-heeled transfemoral prosthesis specifically for the character. The prop was built from a cast of Capshaw’s own upper thigh to ensure a perfect fit.

Technicians used actual prosthetic components and covered the device with a silicone skin cover matching Capshaw’s skin tones. The finished prop was personally flown to Los Angeles by A Step Ahead’s program director, Amy Palmiero-Winters, who also trained Capshaw in how to walk and stand with it.

A special harness was also designed for non-amputees to wear the prosthetic. This allowed Capshaw to appear as if she were using a real prosthetic leg during the rare scenes where it was visible.

“We only shot with a prosthetic when we shot Arizona without her pants on. I didn’t film with a prosthetic very much,” she added. Instead, the show relied heavily on visual effects. “It was a lot of CGI. I filmed with a prosthetic once. I tied my leg behind my back and then tied a prosthetic leg on,” she revealed.

The one exception? A scene where Arizona’s leg was visibly exposed, a rare moment that required the practical prop. For the vast majority of episodes, Capshaw’s own leg was simply hidden from view or digitally removed in post-production using green screen techniques.
